Kid Friendly Options for Eating On-the-Go

Anybody who has kids knows that once they are born life becomes even faster paced and more hectic. Life before children is easily less stressful and time consuming, however, once kids are introduced the parents must make adjustments. Part of these adjustments is budgeting time more wisely as a good deal of your schedule will revolve around your children.

Since there is far less time than before it is often difficult to make healthy meals at home which leads many parents to the convenience of fast food restaurants. While fast food options are inevitable at certain times (and definitely worth the extra workout for some fries), many parents agree that they need to find a healthier substitute for fast food.

A quick, efficient, and healthy meal can definitely be tough to find in a time crunch. One acceptable substitute for greasy fast food could be a healthier quick service food place. While this seems like an oxymoron there are plenty of places you can take the kids for a quick bite to eat. One example of this is a sandwich shop such as Subway or Quiznos. Often times these restaurants will have a variety of healthy options that the kids will love and since these types of shops let you customize your sandwich you can choose exactly which ingredients go into your kids’ meals! Stick with lean meats like turkey, and veggies for a good option. You can also swap out white bread for wheat to cut down on sugar.

If you are really in a rush, however, a fast food restaurant may be your only option. In this case, the most prudent option for a healthy meal is likely one of the salads or wraps which will be a healthier meal than the typical burger and fries (plus the wraps taste great anyways). Many fast food restaurants offer healthier options for kids, such as apples instead of fries. So make sure you ask about what’s available.

If you are determined not to eat in a fast food establishment, however, takeout from a less formal restaurant may be a good second option.  Many chain restaurants will let you call ahead and have your order ready to go when you arrive so it can often be just as quick as driving through McDonalds.
